Last week I had the pleasure to witness my Father and 3000 athletes compete in the Lake Placid Ironman. This event, which consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and a 26.2 mile run, was an amazing experience to witness.
My father, aged 65, completed his 3rd Ironman -- an impressive feat at any age.
Congratulations to him and the other athletes.

Cranberries and UTIs Part II
Leading the news today are several studies showing that cranberries may, in fact, help with UTI prevention. While the evidence is not firm, reviews of several articles are now showing that there is a decreased rate of recurrent UTIs in women, children, and those taking the medication twice daily.
Click below for an example of the new evidence:

However, the form of cranberry (juice vs. capsule) that is best is still in debate. Some people will be better served by the capsule as cranberry juice can disrupt diabetes due to the high sugar content. On the other hand, other individuals may benefit from the increased hydration provided by juice.
We will continue to review this subject as more evidence is gathered.

St. Thomas Robotic Training
Congratulations to the St. Thomas Robotic Team for their successful training event this past Saturday. This event, the first at the hospital, was used to improve our robotics program by educating all staff members on the device and surgeries we perform. Furthermore, new members to our OR staff were given the opportunity to learn about this surgical technique - the future of surgery.
Congratulations to Lisa Baugus and our staff on their great event.
